We are delighted to welcome, for one night only, the Exeter Opera Group as part of their autumn tour of Samson et Dalila by Camille Saint-Saëns.
Exeter Opera Group presents this powerful opera in an engaging and accessible format. Performed in the original French, with piano accompaniment, the production is supported by English narration that helps guide the audience through the story and its dramatic developments. This approach highlights both the beauty of Saint-Saëns' music and the emotional depth of the opera, while making it easy to follow for all listeners. Exeter Opera Group is proud to feature a cast of very talented singers, whose strong vocal performances bring intensity and colour to this iconic work.
Samson et Dalila is set in biblical times and centres on the struggle between the oppressed Hebrews and their Philistine rulers. The opera explores themes of faith, power, betrayal, and seduction. Samson, a Hebrew leader blessed with extraordinary strength by God, inspires his people to resist their oppressors. However, Dalila, a Philistine woman, is determined to discover the secret of his strength. Through charm and manipulation, she wins his trust and ultimately betrays him. Samson's downfall leads to his capture and humiliation, but in the final act, he regains his strength through prayer and sacrifices himself to defeat the Philistines, bringing both destruction and redemption.
Saturday 10th October, 7.30 pm
